November the 2nd 2011

Here i am again, just turned up at Thorney Weir for another 48 hr session.
I am gagging to get my rods out but first things first, find the fish. This was proving to be hard just finished work, traffic was the same for a friday but there’s nothing new there!
The lake if you know it was pitch black, but i still spent over an hour searching. I saw nothing, so i opted for a swim called the hump swim. I finally got my rods out by 22.00 hrs. I was just drifting off and my rod screamed off, after a 10 minute battle i banked a stunning 21lb 8oz big plated mirror.

What a stunning fish, massive apple scales. What a great start an hour in and already ahead. Through the rest of the night it was very quiet, this amazed me cause as all us carp anglers know 940 mb of air presser, south south eastly winds that are warm 14 degress celcius. What more could you ask for. Carpers heaven. They were jumping, crashing dancing around all over my baited areas, i was on the edge of my bedchair till i fell asleep. The next day they were still jumping around like they were gunna spawn again. Defeated i packed up and moved to a swim called the pill box. Wicked swim mostly margin fishing. This is were three of the big forties hang out, just last week this swim took one of the biggest fish in the lake a 44lb common! Wow what a fish.
On edge again dreaming of my rod screaming off to bank that big common, it was a lovely dream while it lasted. Ha!ha!. yet again i had a unsuccessful night. But even though the weather was perfect you still have to consider the two ground frosts we had two weeks prior, it does knock them for six. The English weather, us carpers are going to have to do weather craft as well as water craft.

Tight lines. DANNY MARTIN

May 2011 Thorney Weir

Monday 2nd May

This week i have choosen to fish a 48hr session on the Reowned Thorney Weir, I have read alot of good reports on this day ticket water and is home to the BCAC.

I picked a swim named the blue rope, this is based in a canal like channel that leads to the main lake around 20.00hrs.

I spent a good few hours looking for the fish and as luck goes i found them. ALWAYS LOOK FOR THE FISH.

After spodding about 5 kilos of spod mix  i finally got my rods out. My left rod was fished no more than 2 rod lengths out close to the margin fishing in about 4ft of water on a gravel patch. My right rod was fished to the far margin just over the Canadian pond weed to another gravel spot.

Feeling confident i started to set up my bivvy. Before i know it my right rod pulls round and i am into my first fish of the session.

After  30 minutes of my bait being in the water i banked a stunning 28lb 12oz fullly scaled mirror. This fell to peach and bananna  home made bollie, suffix soft silt rig size 8 hook.

What a rush my confidence was throught the roof. It went very quite for about 7 hrs, i saw no more fish making my  confidence sink  a little. Just about to get my head down for the night and my right hand rod was off again.

20 minutes into the fight i netted a 38lb 14oz mirror “What a Fish” As you can image i was grinning like a cheshire cat.

See most people would sit back and think i don’t care now if i don’t catch any more with what i had just caught. But not me the torch came out i went and spod another 2 kilo of spod mix on the spot.

Now the rod was back out i could not sleep i was buzzing. Just as i was drifting off again the right hand rod was off again. After a great battle at the net and about 15 minutes i bagged a 31lb mirror. What a session this was turning into.

But it did not end there i had 4 more fish 21lb 8oz mirror, 21lb 10oz common, 16lb 12oz common 23lb 10oz common what a night.

The next morning arrived and it kept producing fish 14lb 8oz mirror and 10 minutes it was in 23lb 14oz fully scaled mirror.

Just looking at the quality of these fish you could tell you either have good anglers or just a well looked after lake.

Through the next night the temperature dropped to 1 degrees it was a quite night. But no complaining here i managed to get a good nights sleep.

I can honestly say for a Day Ticket water its jaw dropping. To of had 2 thirties 5 twentiesand 2 doubles in a 48 hr sesion speaks for itself.

Don’t get the impression this is an easy water because its far from it, but for 16 acres and a stock of 700  to 900 fish 4 forties big head of thirties and lots of twenties you are sure to beat your PB down here.

“All the best and tight lines” untill next time
